Bill Farmer appears at Florida Supercon -July 3-6, Miami
Bill Farmer is best known as the voice of Goofy, Pluto and Horace Horsecollar for Disney, as well as the voices of Yosemite Sam, Sylvester, and Foghorn Leghorn in Space Jam.
Bill is one of the busiest Voice Actors in the business. Just this year Bill received an Emmy Nomination for his work on Disney’s Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, The Friz Freiling Lifetime Achievement Award (the first time the honor has been given to a voice talent) and in 2009 was honored with Disney’s highest award when he became a Disney Legend. Bill is best known for his work as Disney’s Goofy and Pluto. He has also played in The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse (1987), Goof Troop (1992), Mickey Mouse Works (1999), House of the Mouse (2001), the Mickey Mouse Club House (2006), and over 3000 other Disney projects. He is now recording the fourth season of the #1 rated Mickey Mouse Clubhouse seen on the Disney Channel. Other major Disney films include Prince and the Pauper, A Goofy Movie, An Extremely Goofy Movie, The Three Musketeers, and Once Upon a Christmas. Disney/Pixar projects include work on Toy Story, A Bugs Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, and Cars.
Farmer voiced Yosemite Sam, Sylvester, and Foghorn Leghorn for the movie Space Jam. Bill worked with Warner Brothers doing the voices of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck on an episode of Robot Chicken last season. Farmer voiced Astro Boy in 2004 and a character in Shrek 2. He has also voiced numerous characters for video games.
Ever since he was a kid, he was enamored with cartoons. He grew up in a small town in Kansas without much to do, so Saturday mornings were always fun because it was a time for cartoons. He learned he had a knack for doing voices of all the characters he liked. Goofy was a favorite. He never dreamed that one day he would actually become the voice of Goofy.
Bill believes that cartoon voices are not just about funny voices. He took acting classes when he moved to California. His mentor was the late Daws Butler, the voice behind many of the Hanna-Barbera characters. Daws got Bill to realize that when doing cartoon voices, you’re not merely doing a funny voice, you’re an actor. You have to think like the character you’re doing and convey the action in your voice.
Disney’s iconic Goofy giggle has resonated throughout the world since its creation in 1932 and will soon resonate through the hills of the UCLA campus when Bill Farmer, the official voice of Goofy, makes his appearance.
The Disney Club of UCLA is presenting “An Evening with Bill Farmer” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Moore Hall. This is the first Disney Club event to showcase a comedic member of The Walt Disney Company, as well as one who is still active in the industry.
The event will begin with trivia questions for the audience and a chance to win prizes that include autographed head shots of Farmer. Then, Farmer will present a video and discuss his experience as a comedian and voice actor, closing with a Q&A; segment from the Disney Club and the audience.
Bill Farmer discovered his knack for impressions when he was 12 years old, but growing up in a small Kansas town, show business and Hollywood seemed like a million miles away. Today, however, he is right in the thick of the industry and has been bringing the iconic Goofy character to life for the last 27 years.
“My friends would put me up to pranks where we’d drive through things like McDonald’s, and they’d say, ‘Order in a weird voice!’ … and it just kind of started from there,” Farmer said.
Bill will be attending Emerald City Comicon in Seattle, Washington on March 28-30, 2014. Visit the Emerald City Comicon web site for complete information.
Only the second person in history to ever be the voice of Goofy, he’s also voiced various characters in other Disney features like Toy Story and Hercules, the video games Dead Rising and Kingdom Hearts, is Secret Squirrel on Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, and can be heard often on Robot Chicken!
Interview: Disney Legend, Bill Farmer talks about voicing Goofy and new Disney Junior series “The 7D” with Media Mikes
Bill was interviewed recently for the Media Mikes blog. You can read the entire interview on their site.
You may not know the name Bill Farmer but you will certainly know his voice. He has been voicing Goofy and Pluto for nearly 30 years and was named a Disney Legend in 2009. Bill also has voiced tons of other notable characters including Foghorn Leghorn, Sylvester the Cat and Yosemite Sam in the film ”Space Jam”. Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Bill about his voice roles and what we can expect from the new Disney Junior series “The 7D”.
Mike Gencarelli: You’ve been voicing Goofy and Pluto for nearly 30 years; what is it like hold these reigns for so long?
Bill Farmer: I think for any voice actor you can consider it a great honor to get a long lasting character. It is very competitive out here. Especially to get one of the Disney characters, I think it is one of the highest honors you can get in animation. Goofy was also my favorite Disney character growing up as a kid, which only made it that much sweeter that I ended up voicing him all these years.
MG: Do you feel that voicing characters like Goofy have changed for you the years?
BF: Voicing Goofy has certain changed my LIFE for the better. I first came to California as a stand-up comic. I had no idea that I would be voicing a character like Goofy. The audition came to me and it was very out of left field. I got a tape of Pinto Colvig and practiced it over the weekend. Then I went in and laid it down at the agency and about a month later they told me that I was going to get to do a Goofy job. I didn’t know if it was going to be more than one but after 27 years they are still using me. So (in Goofy’s voice) “Gaush, I guess I got lucky”.
